COSA Nutrition and Exercise Group Fellowships

The COSA Nutrition and Exercise Group Fellowships were created as opportunities for early-career researchers to take a coordination and leading role in research studies aimed at establishing a detailed map of the nutrition and exercise services available in cancer centres in Australia, including whether availability differs across cancer diagnoses, treatment modalities and stage of treatment. The Fellows receive mentorship, guidance and support from members of the respective Group Executive Committees which comprise internationally renowned senior clinicians and researchers in nutrition and exercise within oncology.

Nutrition Fellow - Emily Jeffery

The Project

Assessing the current provision of nutrition and dietetic services to people with cancer within acute health services providing cancer treatment across Australia to identify where targeted service improvement and advocacy are most needed.

Progress

Dr Emily Jeffery is the inaugural COSA Nutrition Fellow. Emily is assessing the current provision of nutrition and dietetic services to people with cancer within acute health services providing cancer treatment across Australia to identify where targeted service improvement and advocacy are most needed. She is supported by A/Prof Nicole Kiss and A/Prof Merran Findlay.

Work on the Nutrition Fellowship project began in late 2023 with the drafting of the project protocol, ethics submission and questionnaire. The project team sought feedback on the survey tool from an expert group of dietitians, and the survey was finalised and distributed in mid-2024 for completion by eligible nutrition and dietetics and allied health managers or team leaders.

The survey closed in December 2024. The project team has analysed data from the survey and submitted an abstract to share the outcomes of the research at the COSA-IPOS ASM.
